‘Stay in a luxury villa the architect created for herself’

Villa Antorea was built by the celebrated designer Bettina Marksteiner as her own holiday home.  In it she created a fabulous blend of traditional Puglian stone-built architecture with furnishings and decoration from India, Africa and Italy.  Surrounded by wonderful gardens and set around a lovely lake-style pool, the house is an oasis of tranquility for a perfect holiday in the sunshine of southern Italy.

The Villa

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, sleeps up to 6 people, 136 s.qm of living surface and the villa stands in the middle of 14.000 s.qm of land.

Master Bedroom with ensuite bathroom. 2 further bedrooms with a large bathroom. Living Room, Dining Room and Modern Kitchen. Utility Room and gorgeous fireplace. The double bed size are 180cm x 200cm and 300cm X 200cm, this bed could be used for 3 children.

Inside

Entering via its double glass doors, you come to a large central living, dining and kitchen area set under a traditional barrel-vaulted stone roof in the style of a traditional ‘lamia’ house typical of the region.  To your left is a kitchen comprehensively fitted out with the finest German equipment and a fabulous glass topped dining table.  In the centre is a glass and bronze fireplace, and to the right the living area with Moroccan armchairs, television with all Sky channels and an indoor and outdoor music system.  All the three bedrooms are fitted out with Indian fabrics and Italian works of art, with elegant bathrooms, one featuring a unique Roman style stone bath.

Outside

You approach Villa Antorea by its own private drive through olive groves and meadow land.  The house it set at the top of a hill, with long views across the olive-filled landscape and gentle breezes to soften the summer sun.  Like an oasis enclosed by exotic gardens, the pool is like a lake reaching almost to the doors of the villa.  The house has been designed for outdoor living, with outdoor kitchen, barbeque, dining area, hammocks, loungers and a seating area filled with jasmine and other scentedflowers.  With one of the most impressive cactus gardens, it is hard to imagine a more stylish holiday escape than this.

Exploring the Area

The house is set in the much sought-after Valle d’Itria, and land of rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards, and dark red soils surrounded by ancient dry stone walls.  At the four points of the compass are the captivating white-painted hill towns of Ostuni, Ceglie Messapica, Cisternino and Martina Franca, each with its own style and personality.  This part of Puglia can plausibly claim the best food in Italy.  There are six Michelin starred restaurants within a 30 minute radius, and those are arguably not the best in the area.  There is a choice of beaches on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, one about 25 minutes away, the other perhaps 40.  Neither coastline is developed with hotels, nor will you find sardine-style rows of sunbeds as elsewhere in Italy.  Instead, you will enjoy beachside restaurants and bars, sand dunes and the clearest water in the country.  For the energetic, Lecce is a glorious Baroque town, dubbed the ‘Florence of the South,’ Egnazia is an important archaeological site from Roman times and earlier, and exquisite medieval cathedrals and castles from the Crusader period and before line the coast.
